The League of Municipalities' is currently accepting applications from high school Juniors and Seniors for its annual scholarship competition. The Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship offers a $1,000 awards to three winning essayists in New Jersey each year.
The competition is judged first on the municipal level with Mayor Bud O'Hagan and a judging committee selecting one winner to represent the borough at the state level, which is then narrowed down to 15 semi-finalists by the League of Municipalities Scholarship Committee. Three winners are awarded a $1,000 scholarship each.
The topic of this year's essay is "What My Mayor and Governing Body Do Best." Essays should be approximately 500 words, and are judged based on appropriateness of theme, effective articulation of theme, originality, technical composition, spelling and syntax.
The deadline for submission to Mayor O'Hagan is March 8. The application packet is available on the League of Municipalities website and from Borough Hall.
The scholarship is named after former Hawthorne Mayor Louis Bay 2nd and is open to all high school juniors and seniors living in Midland Park. In past years, there have been two Midland Park residents who were awarded the scholarship.
