Midland Park Resident Earns Track Honors at Calvin
● By Anonymous
The Calvin College men's track and field team is ranked 25th nationally and sophomore Ben de Waal Malefyt, of Midland Park, has been a big reason why. In his second year of collegiate track and field, the Eastern Christian High School graduate has been a solid factor in the field events for the Knights.
This past weekend at the MIAA Jamboree held in Olivet, Michigan, de Waal Malefyt took third in the discus with a throw of 145-10. The effort helped the Calvin men take first place at the meet which is worth one-half of the final MIAA title.
Two weeks prior at the Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College, he cranked out a career-best throw of 160-3 in the discus that currently has him ranked 22nd nationally on the NCAA Division III performance list in the event. For his efforts at the Grand Rapids Open, de Waal Malefyt was named the MIAA Field Event Athlete of the Week — earning the award for the first time in his career.
"Ben is one of the most improved athletes in our track and field program," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "He has worked very hard to refine his technique and he continues to get better each day. More importantly, his outgoing and infectious personality is a big positive within our program. He is well liked by his teammates and has developed into a strong leader."
Calvin is back in action this weekend, competing at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.
