Hazel's County Fair To Benefit MPK Native
● By Anonymous
Elaine Mejury-Mazurek doesn't want her cancer to overshadow her daughter Hazel's childhood. The Midland Park native, who was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer last spring, is getting a hand from her coworkers and friends at the Wyckoff Family YMCA with Hazel's County Fair on Saturday, June 8. The fair, to be held as part of the Fourth Annual Wyckoff Day, will give 3-year-old Hazel the biggest party of her life (thus far) while also raising funds to help pay Elaine's medical bills.
Elaine, who grew up playing sports in Midland Park, has been working at the Wyckoff Family YMCA for more than 10 years, first as a gym instructor and Sports Director during summer camp, and later as a preschool teacher. She is well loved by students and staff alike.
"Elaine is awesome! Before becoming ill, Elaine was known as the girl with the 'big personality.' Funny, enthusiastic and was up for anything. She was wonderful with the preschoolers" said MaryBeth McGuire, Childcare Director, Wyckoff YMCA. "After she became ill, she could have felt sorry for herself and no one would blame her. Instead her positive attitude, her funny and sometimes (shameless) ways she talks about her illness makes you wonder. This amazing woman is showing all of us how to handle what life throws at you and prioritize what’s important. I admire her strength and determination to deal with what you get."
Highlights of Hazel's County Fair include Wyckoff Day vendors, rides, food, County Fair booths, games and activities, raffle baskets, 50/50 and a lakeside volleyball game. The day will with a ‘Duckie Derby” race on Spring Lake at 4pm. Ducks cost $6 each and comes with a duck quacker.
All proceeds from Hazel’s County Fair will go directly to the Mejury-Mazurek family through the YMCA Pietro Maugeri Foundation, an organization formed in memory of a well-known Ho-Ho-Kus barber that financially assists families that are adversely affected with critical illnesses or injuries.
Hazel's County Fair will be held Saturday, June 8 from 11am to 5pm at the Wyckoff Y, 691 Wyckoff Ave. in Wyckoff. For more information, call the Y at 201-891-2081.
