Four Generations of Highland School Grads!
Highland School Early Days
Thursday night's sixth grade graduation was extra special for the Chirkis family. RJ Chirkis is the fourth generation in his family to graduate from Highland School. His mother, Kathleen Henderson, now Chirkis, was in the class of 1983 at the time when Highland went to seventh grade. Her mother, Evelyn Koetseer, now Henderson, graduated Highland School in 1953. And her mother, Hilda Osterholt, was the first in the family to attended Highland School in the late 1920s early 1930s.
Chirkis's grandmother, Hilda, came to Midland Park from Holland and married a boy from town. "My grandfather moved from Paterson to Midland Park to be in the 'country'," she said. He did not attend Highland School, but the previous Midland Park school, which was located where the Midland Park Memorial Library is now.
"I can't claim to be the first to have this happen to," Chirkis explained. "My cousins also have had their kids go through Midland Park schools as well. But, it's exciting for me nonetheless."
