● By Anonymous
Ackerman Music Center and K&S Music are presenting a Jazz Workshop with Dave Watson on Saturday, July 13. The event is for flute players from grade 7 to adult and will be held from 12 to 3pm. The event was initially scheduled to be at Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, however the sponsors had to change the venue to the Rockland Conservatory of Music, 45 S Main St Pearl River, NY.
Watson, a renowned jazz flute and saxophonist with over 30 years experience in the industry, will present a fun and interactive jazz workshop where students will learn how to play jazz licks, which will help them play through the Blues.
He will also teach performance techniques geared to flutes only and talk about writing music, how to create your future in music, and how to find your creative spirit and identity as a musician. He will be joined by his trio, consisting of vibes, percussion, and piano. The group will perform a short concert of derivative musical styles. Student performers will also have an opportunity to play with the trio during the workshop!
Watson is a prolific recording and touring artist in the contemporary music world with Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, India Arie, The O’Jays, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Police, and The Sugar Hill Gang to name a few. During his last Tour with Alicia Keys in 2008 they performed 103 Concerts in 30 countries.
When not touring he teaches private Flute and Saxophone, he also does recording sessions and a Live Show with his horn section Chops Horns. He has been a music educator for 21 years and has a BA in music education. He is currently teaching in the Newark Public School System and also works for Jazz House Kids teaching a jazz ensemble at his school, the Oliver St. School. When it come to teaching, Watson has been described as a “force to be reckoned with". His love and enthusiasm for teaching "ignites a real fire in his students and makes them want to be the best they can b," according to the event's release.
