Aug. 1 Accident

An accident at the intersection of North Monroe Street and West Glen Avenue in Ridgewood sent the two drivers to Valley Hospital. One of the injured was a Midland Park resident driving a Honda Civic with Midland Park Fire Department bumper sticker and a Borough of Midland Park magnet.

The accident occurred shortly before 9pm on Thursday, when the Midland Park driver reportedly ran a red light while traveling west on Glen Avenue, colliding with a Ridgewood driver and careening into $10,000 traffic signal equipment box, according to a report in Ridgewood Patch. He was issued a citation for running a red light, police said.

The driver, who was trapped in the car, was freed from the vehicle by Ridgewood firefighters using the "Jaws of Life" to remove a door. The accident occurred within several yards of a Ridgewood firehouse, and firefighters raced to the scene on foot to provide aid before the pumper truck containing necessary emergency rescue and first aid equipment arrived.

Ridgewood Fire Chief James Van Goor, who lives nearby, also raced to the scene to assume incident command. Ridgewood Emergency Services personnel also responded to provide lighting and temporary traffic control devices. The traffic light is being powered by a generator and police are expected to patrol the intersection during Friday's rush hour.
