Changes Set For Travel Baseball
By Rebecca K. Abma
Baseball tryouts are coming early this year.
The Midland Park Baseball Association is getting a serious jumpstart on the spring season, calling for travel baseball applications for 2014 to be submitted by Sept. 12. Tryouts for travel teams ages U9 to U14 are planned for the weekend of Sept. 22, weather permitting. The incoming U8 team will continue with its no-cut policy.
According to a letter sent out by MPBA president Dana Weisbrot, the decision to begin the process early is to "capitalize on good weather for outdoor tryouts and not be forced to host them indoors where simulating baseball conditions may be challenging; Hosting a September tryout is in better alignment with the baseball season. Kids are not far removed from their travel season and they will be in better baseball condition during the tryout; and [the association] is pursuing the establishment of a developmental travel team for those kids who are not selected for the U9-U14 team."
The developmental team for U9-U14 gives boys who do not make the team or do not wish to try out an opportunity to still play travel baseball. Exactly how the team will shape up is not fully known. One option is to combine U9 and U10 into one team and U11 and U12 into another. Another option is to partner with another town, if there aren't enough boys interested in a Midland Park only team.
"Our foremost goal is to keep the kids playing baseball and providing an avenue for them to do so," Weisbrot said.
A mandatory parents meeting will be held with each team to give everyone an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns prior to the start of the 2014 season. For more information and the application, visit the Midland Park Baseball Association online or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
