Will The Roofs Be Ready In Time For School To Start?
Roof work has begun at all three schools, but with less than three weeks until the first day of school, the big question is whether or not the work will be completed in time? The $1.3 million project includes complete tear off and replacement of sections roof at each school. The work was expected to be completed during the summer, but did not begin until mid-August.
In April, voters approved a second question funding $955,075 for partial roof replacements at all three schools. The board is using surplus funds of approximately $400,000 from the 2012-13 budget for the project.
The Board of Education awarded the contracts for the work at Midland Park Junior-Senior High School and Godwin School for $688,000 and $248,835 respectively at the June 25 meeting. The Highland School contract for $294,000 was awarded at the July 23 meeting and includes stabilizing the parapets. Additional work is expected to be awarded at Tuesday night's meeting.
When finished, the roof replacements at Highland and Godwin Schools will be completed in entirety, while the high school roof will have another 20 percent left to be replaced, officials said.
