Midland Park

Meet The New AD: Michael Gaccione

08/22/2013 03:35PM ● By Rebecca K. Abma

Michael Gaccione begins as AD/AP in October.

A new Athletic Director-slash-Assistant Principal is coming to Midland Park Junior Senior High School this fall. The Board of Education approved Michael Gaccione for the position at its Aug. 20 meeting. Gaccione comes to Midland Park from Belleville High School, where he has taught math and coached soccer for the past eight years.

A graduate of Lyndhurst High School, a fellow Group I school, he said the Midland Park School District reminds him of his home town in terms of size and demographics. A district of this size has both pluses and minuses, he noted. Challenges include a smaller pool of student athletes participating, which can make it hard to put together teams. On the flip side, a small district gives the opportunity to get to know each student better, and also offers a greater sense of community support.

While sports are his passion — his favorite sports are soccer, hockey, basketball and baseball — he is equally excited about his new role as Assistant Principal.

"As a math teacher, and even as a coach, I have always pushed academics," Gaccione said, noting  that most student athletes don't go on to become professional athletes. The assistant principal post will have him overseeing the Junior High students in grades 7 and 8.

Since his approval from the board came so late in the summer, his current position at Belleville can hold him for up to 60 days. He is expected to begin the new position in Midland Park on Oct. 21 or sooner.

The former AD/AP Peter Galasso was promoted to Assistant Principal of Senior High students earlier this summer, filling the position made vacant after June Chang was appointed to the Director of Curriculum post.
