Beware of the Grandparents Scam

Ridgewood police are warning residents about the Grandparent Scam, where calls are made to the victims claiming to be their grandchild in jail. The caller usually requests that bail money be wired via Western Union to post bail. A short time later a second call requesting more money for an attorney. The victims find out later that their grandchild is at home and not in jail.

Last week two Ridgewood residents reported falling for the scam. One sent $1,500 to Mexico by Western Union, the other $1,390 to the Dominican Republic.
