Shop Local: Shop at Home With Barefoot Carpet
By Rebecca K. Abma
Anyone who has ever shopped for flooring has probably
experienced it: You bring your paint chips and upholstery samples to the
showroom, think you’ve found the perfect shade only for it to look completely
different once you get it home. That’s a problem you’ll never encounter
shopping with Barefoot Carpet & Flooring. The shop-at-home service, owned by Midland Park
native Tom Faber, brings the showroom to you.
“I’ve found that my clients would rather shop from the comfort of their own homes or offices, in the lighting and the atmosphere of the room they are decorating,” he explained. “Not only is this convenient for my clients, but it also allows me to do what I enjoy the most, which is helping out with different shades and colors of flooring.”
Faber got his start in the flooring business almost 25 years ago, installing carpets for his uncle’s business in Hawthorne. After a few years, he bought a van and started subcontracting for local flooring companies. Then 15 years ago, he decided to transition to owning his own business, and Barefoot Carpet & Flooring was born.
He started out setting small goals for business growth. “First it was three new customers a week, then five, and so on,” he said. Soon, Barefoot Carpet began generating enough business for Faber to open a storefront in Godwin Plaza. However, he soon learned that customers were more interested in shop-at-home convenience than the showroom experience.
Faber, a father of three, decided to cut the overhead costs of maintaining and a staffing a storefront and eliminate the inconvenience of being tethered to the shop. He returned Barefoot Carpet to its mobile showroom roots, a move that allows him to pass savings on to his customers.
The In-Home Flooring Experience
For those new to the shop-at-home experience, it all starts with a phone call to Barefoot Carpet to set up a convenient appointment and discuss your project. What will the flooring be used for? What type of material: Carpet, hardwood, laminate or vinyl? What colors? Faber then hand picks samples to bring to your home at the time of the appointment, which can be made daytime, evening and even on the weekends. Depending on the customer's schedule, Faber said he can schedule a consultation appointment in within a week.
At the consultation, he brings several samples into the home or office, measures the room, and helps match the colors to the furniture and paint. Seeing the samples in the setting and lighting of the room, he said, makes it easier for customers to get the project right the first time — a process Faber is so confident in, that he offers a 30-Day No Regrets Guarantee.
With 25 years of experience in the flooring business, Faber can usually give customers an estimate on the spot. Installation is a roughly two-week turn around time, scheduled when it is convenient for you. Barefoot Carpet also offers a Lifetime Installation Warranty.
