Long awaited roof replacement work is slated to begin at Highland School this week, officials announced. The work, contracted to Safeway Contractors for $294,000, will be done after school hours.

During the construction students will not be permitted to exit through the back doors of the school because materials will be stored behind the building. The field steps and ramp are still accessible and may be used throughout the project.

The roof work is part of a $1.3 million project that included a complete tear off and replacement of sections of roof at each school. In April, voters approved a second question funding $955,075 for the project, with an additional $315,000 of surplus funds from from the 2012-13 budget included in the project.

The work was expected to be completed during the summer, but did not begin until late August at Godwin School and Midland Park Junior-Senior High School. The Godwin project, awarded to E. R. Barrett, Inc. for $248,835, was completed and cleaned up prior to the first day of school. The work at the high school, which was awarded to Safeway Contracting for $688,000, continued through the first few weeks of school, during which time, ceiling tiles in a different area of the building fell on students. The tiles, which were original to the building, did not contain asbestos and there were no serious injuries.

The Highland School contract was awarded later in the summer, because the project also includes stabilizing the parapets.
