Catherine Violet Hubbard loved animals of all kinds, from a tiny caterpillar in the palm of her hand, to a horse towering over her. The 6-year-old made friends with them, nurtured them and whispered to them “Tell your friends I am kind.” She dreamed of being an animal rescuer and even created her own business cards for Catherine’s Animal Shelter.

Catherine, the daughter of Midland Park High School Class of 1990 graduate Matt Hubbard and his wife Jenny, was killed one year ago this weekend in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT. In her memory, her family is building the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, through the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation

The foundation is working with the The Animal Center of Newtown to create a safe haven for all creatures.

"We're (going to) create a place where creatures can come and heal and find tranquility, and Catherine is going to be so proud," Jenny Hubbard told WFSB 3 Connecticut. "She is going to be thrilled that we brought her all her animals."

Fundraising for the project has been done through the foundation, including a project called Catherine’s Peace Team, which was started by Catherine’s cousin Jack Sullivan, a 9-year-old from Brighton, NY. According to reports, CPT has raised more than $75,000 for the project. In total, close to $500,000 has been raised for the sanctuary.

Last month, Catherine was named the ASPCA Tommy Manahan Kid of the Year in memorium to honor her legacy of kindness to animals. The award, named for a boy who died trying to rescue his pets from a fire, celebrates the way Catherine shared tremendous love and concern for the animals around her.

"I hope that the animal center and her legacy is one of a feeling of grace and compassion," Jenny Hubbard said. "And I hope that in 30 years my son can bring his kids there and say look at what your aunt built."
