03/05/2014 01:27PM ● By Rebecca K. Abma

The basketball programs at Midland Park High School are hot this season, with both the boys and girls varsity teams in the North 1, Group 1 Section of the State Basketball Tournament.

On Tuesday, the Panther boys played one of the most exciting games this season, defeating Waldwick 66-60 in over time.

The team had previously lost to the Warriors twice during the regular season, which was a cause for concern going into the game. The Panthers turned in a total team effort in the hard fought victory.

A 16-point MP lead was wiped out primarily by Doug Palmadessa of Waldwick who ended up with 42 points, sending the game to OT.Midland Park hit important foul shots and played good team defense to come out on top. Ron Kruis had 23, Ryan Coughlin 18, Jack Hansen 17 and excellent defensive efforts turned in by James Kennedy and Matt Genao all important factors in the game.

The Panthers have no time to rest as they play Wednesday against Cresskill at 7 pm at Cresskill, the #1 Seeded team in the Section.

The Lady Panthers also won the first round of the states on Tuesday, defeating Palisades Park 55-20 in the first round. The Lady Panthers balanced scoring was led by Nicole Cartaino and Rebecca Rabeiro who led the way with 14 points each while Thalia Ghalam 11 points, Veronica Pantale 8 points and Julie Carey 7 aided the win. With the win the Lady Panthers improved to 22-2 on the year.

The Lady Panthers will face Boonton Wednesday at home 7PM in the 2nd round. Please come out and support the Lady Panthers.
