Candidates Night Set For April 10
● By Rebecca K. Abma
Meet the four candidates who are running for three seats on the Midland Park Board of Education at the joint PTA sponsored Candidate's Night on April 10. The debate will be moderated by a representative from the Bergen County PTA and held from 7:30-9:30 at the Highland School Media Center.
Midland Park Press gave each candidate the opportunity to share in their own words why they are running for the school board and what they hope to achieve if elected. The candidates profiles are available here: James Canellas, Maryalice Thomas, John Meeks and Peter Triolo.
Also on the April 23 ballot is the proposed $20.7 million school budget for the 2014-15 school year. If approved, the average home assessed at $392,000 will see a reduction in taxes by almost $224. The decrease in taxes, yet increase in budget is due to last year's second question for roof replacements at the three schools, which was funded over the 2013-14 school year. The proposed budget will raise taxes by $129.02 over the general tax levy from last year, excluding the second question. However, the actual tax bill did not differentiate between the budget and debt services, so the next tax bill will reflect a decrease in the schools portion.
Polls will be open on Wednesday, April 23 from 2 to 9pm.
